Lake Bolsena: things to do and see

Lake Bolsena is a large volcanic lake in Tuscia, overlooked by Montefiascone. With historic lakeside villages, two islands, beaches and sweeping viewpoints, it is a rewarding area to explore using Montefiascone as a panoramic hilltop base.

Montefiascone and the lake

Montefiascone overlooks the lake from above: the Rocca dei Papi offers one of the widest views across the whole basin. This makes the town a convenient base from which to drop down to the shore and return to the hill in the evening, mixing culture, nature and wine without long transfers.

A volcanic lake

Lake Bolsena fills a broad volcanic caldera and covers about 113.5 km² with a maximum depth of around 151 m, making it one of Europe's largest volcanic lakes. Its clean waters and deep basin make it popular for swimming and water sports in the warm season.

Villages, islands and beaches

The shore is dotted with characterful villages: Bolsena, Marta and Capodimonte. The islands of Bisentina and Martana sit at its centre, reached by seasonal boat trips. See also what to see on Lake Bolsena and the best villages.
